CW: This story contains violence, abuse, disturbing imagery, and child death. Read at your own discretion.

Drip. Drip. Drip.
A leak echoed in the expanse of this unfamiliar setting. Water-damaged tiles and mold hung overhead, ugly and gray. Paint peeled from the walls and the floors were cracked tiles leading to a glass wall. There was a makeshift desk consisting of a damaged table and lopsided stool.
There was no door.
Springs poked through Ayida’s clothes and irritated her scars. It forced her to sit up. Dingy covers fell away revealing a set of old white hospital pajamas… a painful reminder of recovery. Ayida tugged at the worn cotton fabric. Biting her lip, she blinked a few times trying to will the scene away, hoping it was just a dream. When nothing changed, she looked to the glass where another girl sat in bed on the other side. An ebony mop of curly hair haloed her head and obscured her face from view as she turned towards Ayida.
“Hey? Can you hear me? D-do you know where we are?”
No answer.
Ayida took a shaky breath and swung her legs over the side of the bed, pausing midway through standing when the girl mimicked her. Bare feet moved forward one hesitant step at a time, the cold floor making sharp pinpricks into the soles as she made her way to the glass. The woman followed. When she was a foot away from the glass, she waved her hand. The girl mimicked right down to the slight twitch in her fingers. Ayida let her hand fall. The other girl didn’t.
Crack!
Ayida screamed at the sound of the girl’s hand impacting the glass. The girl beat at the glass, making hairline fractures run towards the ceiling and floor. Ayida stumbled backward and fell, but didn’t stop moving away. A sinister smile peeked beneath all that hair; the right side of her mouth split to her cheek. The white scrubs began to bleed wine red as she continued to beat at the glass with both hands.
Get out!
“NO!” Ayida screamed. “Stay away from me!”
GET OUT!
Ayida’s back hit the bed and she cringed when the glass shattered. The girl in red walked through the shards of glass with bare feet, her back hunched and her midsection dripped with blood. Behind her, a shadow began to rise and spread over the ceiling and walls. Goosebumps pricked her skin, and her breaths came in white puffy clouds as she shivered in fear and from the cold. Ayida shook her head and pressed herself against the bed, too scared to try any means of escape. The girl knelt silently in front of her, the crooked smile becoming a sinister grin.
L E T S P L A Y!
Why are you still here!
Ayida cringed as pain bloomed in her middle. Her eyes went to the sudden welling of blood in her diaphragm that began to dye her own scrubs red. Shocked, her hands cradled the wound trying to stop it even though the warmth seeped through her fingers. Trembling she looked to the girl, but found the faceless monster in her face, inches away. Blood bubbled from Ayida’s lips as she cried. Its head tilted this way and that, its large colorless claw reaching slowly to wrap around her body like a doll. It lifted her from the floor gently. She whimpered in terror as it… embraced her…
embraced…
held close…
I H A V E Y O U N O W
I have you now…
Ayida’s blurred vision began to clear and she felt groggy as though just waking. She was on her feet, standing in her father’s bedroom near his bed. A weight in her hand made her raise it and she stared at the kitchen knife clenched tightly in her fist. She turned it over catching the glint of the moonlight and giving ruby glow to the stains on the blade. A sense of awe and anticipation filled her as the red reflected in her colorless eyes. She flicked them from the blade to her father’s form beneath the comforters. Ayida moved deliberately slow, careful not to jar the mattress as she climbed onto it. One hand on her father’s chest, Ayida shoved him lightly to rouse him. A wet warmth soaked her hands and she pulled back to gaze at her fingers. A crooked smile spread over her face at the vibrant red. The darkening sheets covering her father were pulled back slowly to reveal a gushing hole in his chest. Ripped pieces of flesh were flayed open with blood running black over his skin as it soaked his nightshirt and the mattress beneath.
Not enough.
I T S T I L L B R E A T H E S
Ayida let the knife hover over her father’s neck. Ayida pressed a chaste kiss to his forehead and brought the knife down violently on his Adam’s apple.
“STOP!”
Ayida catapulted herself from bed, falling painfully on the floor and cringing from the pain in her side and head. She lay there panting and staring at the ceiling—her ceiling—in alarm. Crying out, Ayida held her side and forced herself out of bed. Dizzily, she stumbled into the bathroom and rummaged through the medicine cabinet for her pain meds and the amber pills.
Never miss a dose!
Never tell anyone!
Be good!
Get. Out.
She shoved the capsules in her mouth and guzzled from the faucet before sliding helplessly to the floor. The cold press of tile alleviated some of the burning in her body and soon, the pounding migraine slipped away. It was easy to remain in the bathroom where it felt safe and she was able to curl in on herself until her eyes grew heavy. Lids fluttered as her body relaxed completely, but it didn’t stop the tears welling up in her eyes. As sleep finally returned, she felt a hand slide through her hair but was too out of it to react to it.
I don’t understand… why are you still here?
